Course Overview

The NPORS Excavator as a Crane (N100) course is designed for operators who use excavators to carry out lifting operations. This course equips candidates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely operate an excavator in a crane role, ensuring compliance with legal requirements such as LOLER and PUWER.

Candidates will learn how to safely rig, lift, and move loads using excavators, recognising the specific hazards and control measures associated with this type of operation. The course includes practical assessments and theory to confirm competence in using an excavator as a crane.

Course Objectives

​

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the relevant health and safety legislation including LOLER and PUWER.

  • Identify the hazards and risks involved in using excavators as cranes.

  • Carry out pre-use inspections and equipment checks.

  • Understand lifting equipment and accessories used with excavators.

  • Perform safe rigging and lifting operations using excavators.

  • Plan lifts considering load weight, centre of gravity, and site conditions.

  • Communicate effectively with site personnel during lifting operations.

  • Complete and maintain necessary documentation, including thorough examination reports.

 

Assessment

  • Theory Assessment: Multiple choice or verbal questioning

  • Practical Assessment: Safe operation of excavator in crane role, including rigging and lifting tasks

  • Novice operators: Typically 2 Days
