Course Overview
​
The NPORS Overhead Crane (N104) course is designed to provide candidates with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely operate overhead travelling cranes (including pendant-controlled and cab-controlled types). This course ensures operators can perform lifting operations efficiently and safely in accordance with current regulations, including LOLER, PUWER, and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Whether you're training new operators or assessing experienced staff, this NPORS-accredited course covers safe lifting techniques, equipment checks, communication, and hazard awareness.
Course Objectives

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

Understand the legal and safety responsibilities of an overhead crane operator.

Identify different types of overhead cranes and their specific uses.

Conduct pre-use inspections and identify faults or hazards.

Operate the crane safely under varying load and site conditions.

Understand load weight estimation and centre of gravity.
-
Use appropriate slinging techniques and lifting accessories.

Communicate effectively during lifting operations using signals or radios.

Follow safe working practices in line with risk assessments and method statements.
Assessment

Practical Test – Hands-on assessment of safe overhead crane operation

Experienced Operators / Refresher / Test Only: 1 Day
Certification

Successful candidates will receive:

NPORS Operator Card & Certificate – Overhead Crane (N104)

Valid for 5 years
✅ CSCS logo can be included on the NPORS card if candidates have passed a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the last 2 years.
