Telescopic Handler - Suspended Load N138

 

 

Course Overview

The NPORS Telescopic Handler – Suspended Load (N138) course is designed to equip operators of telescopic handlers with the necessary skills and knowledge to safely lift, carry, and place suspended loads using appropriate lifting accessories.

This course builds upon standard telescopic handler operation (e.g., NPORS N010), focusing specifically on the additional risks and control measures associated with lifting suspended loads, in compliance with LOLER, PUWER, and site-specific lifting plans.

On successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card & Certificate for Suspended Load (N138).

 

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • Understand legal responsibilities under LOLER, PUWER, and HASAWA

  • Identify and assess the risks involved in handling suspended loads

  • Select and inspect suitable lifting accessories (slings, chains, hooks, etc.)

  • Attach, lift, move, and lower suspended loads safely using a telehandler

  • Understand load swing, stability, and how to control it

  • Work in coordination with a slinger/signaller or lifting supervisor

  • Carry out pre-use checks and emergency procedures

  • Apply safe systems of work and lift plans

 

Assessment

  • Theory Test: Multiple choice or verbal assessment

  • Practical Test: Safe lifting and movement of suspended loads using a telehandler, assessed to NPORS standards

Course Duration

 

  • Experienced Telehandler Operators (Suspended Load Add-On): 1 Day

  • Novice (if combined with standard telehandler training): Up to 5 Days total (N010 + N138)

Certification

 

Successful candidates will receive:

  • NPORS Operator Card & Certificate – N138 (Suspended Load)

  • Valid for 5 years

✅ Option to include the CSCS logo if the candidate has passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the last 2 years.
